European Council, 21-22 October 2021 – Energy Prices

On Thursday 21 October, EU leaders met in Brussels to discuss among other topics the recent spike in energy prices.

The Council discussed the toolbox presented by Kadri Simson last 13 October, identifying it as a useful tool to provide citizens and business short- and long-term aids. Member States needs to use this tool taking into consideration that each State is diverse, and the measures must be adapted.

The European Council invited the Commission to study the functioning of the gas and electricity markets, as well as the EU ETS market with the help of the European Securities Markets Authority (ESMA).

The Commission and the Council should consider additional medium and long-term measures.

The European Investment Bank must examine how to speed up investment in the energy transition.
